Message from Dr Arif Alvi

On the occasion of “Defence Day” on 6th September, 2023

We observe 6th of September as Defence & Martyrs Day to pay tribute to our martyrs and their families who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. On this day, 58 years ago, our Armed Forces and the entire Pakistani nation displayed extraordinary courage and indomitable spirit, and thwarted the evil designs of the enemy. The 1965 War stands out in our history as a symbol of unwavering national resolve, preparedness, professionalism, patriotism and sacrifice. The sons of soil fearlessly fought against the enemy and wrote a shining chapter in history.

Today, we salute the martyrs who laid down their lives for the homeland, and also honour their families for setting examples of sacrificing their loved ones for country’s defence. Our Ghazis deserve respect for giving a tit-for-tat response to enemy’s attacks on Lahore, Sialkot and other sectors. Our soldiers and the nation fought with passion in 1965 and they continue to display the same courage, commitment and professional excellence in all testing times. They have displayed the same spirit during the two-decade-long war against terrorism and extremism. Our successes in this asymmetrical war are testimony to our Armed Forces' capacity to evolve into a unique force having the ability to match the modern-day combat requirements.

On this day, we reiterate Pakistan’s commitment to peace and its policy of peaceful coexistence. We are aware of our national as well as international obligations and are playing our part towards world peace under the banner of the United Nations. Our own region is awaiting the resolution of the longstanding Jammu and Kashmir dispute, which needs international community’s immediate attention. This dispute has to be resolved as per the UN Security Council Resolutions for ensuring peace, security, and development in the region. Today, we also remember the sacrifices of Kashmiri people, women and children, which they have rendered during the decades-long struggle for their right to self-determination. Pakistan will continue to extend its moral and diplomatic support to the Kashmiri people's just struggle for their right to choose their own destiny.

This day also calls for keeping always first the sovereignty of state and integrity and honour of our motherland. Pakistan is the centre of our hopes. On this Defence & Martyrs Day, we continue to honour and respect the sons and daughters of soil, who never hesitate in giving their own life for the defence of motherland, its development and prosperity.

کا 6 ستمبر  2023 ء کو یومِ دفاع و شہداء   کے موقع پر  پیغام

ہم  مادرِ وطن کی خاطر اپنی جانیں قربان کرنے والے شہدا اور  ان کے خاندانوں کو خراج تحسین پیش کرنے کے لیے  6 ستمبر کو یومِ دفاع و شہداء مناتے ہیں۔   58سال قبل آج ہی کے دن ہماری مسلح افواج اورپوری پاکستانی قوم نے غیر معمولی جرأت اور بے مثال جذبے کا مظاہرہ کرتے ہوئے دشمن کے ناپاک عزائم کو ناکام بنادیا تھا۔ اس طرح  جنگِ ستمبر ہماری تاریخ میں غیر متزلزل قومی عزم،  پیشہ ورانہ مہارت اور جذبۂ حب الوطنی و قربانی کی علامت کے طور پر ایک یادگار حیثیت رکھتی ہے۔اس روز مادرِ وطن کے بہادربیٹوں نے دشمن کے خلاف  بے خوفی سے لڑتے  ہوئے تاریخ  کا روشن باب رقم کیا۔

آج ہم ان شہداء کو سلام پیش کرتے ہیں جنہوں نے دفاعِ وطن کا فریضہ ادا  کرتے ہوئے اپنی جانیں نچھاورکیں۔ اس کے ساتھ ساتھ ہم شہداء کے خاندانوں کوبھی خراج تحسین پیش کرتے ہیں جنہوں نے مادرِ وطن کے دفاع کے لیے اپنے پیاروں کی قربانی دے کر ایک مثال قائم کی۔ ہمارے غازیوں کے کارنامے قابلِ فخر ہیں کہ انہوں نے لاہور، سیالکوٹ اور دیگر سیکٹرز پر حملوں کے جواب میں دشمن کو منہ توڑ جواب دیا۔ افواج  پاکستان اور قوم نے 1965 ء میں جس    بے مثال جذبے اور جرات  کا مظاہرہ کیا تھا، انہوں نے  ہر مشکل گھڑی  کا سامنا اسی   جرأت  اور جذبے سے کیا ہے۔ دہشت گردی اور انتہا پسندی کے خلاف دو دہائیوں سے جاری جنگ میں بھی انہوں نے اسی جذبے کا مظاہرہ کیا ہے۔ اس جنگ میں ہماری کامیابیاں ہماری مسلح افواج کی اس مہارت کا منہ بولتا ثبوت ہیں کہ وہ    خود کو جدید جنگی تقاضوں کے مطابق ڈھالنے کی صلاحیت رکھتی ہیں۔

آج کے دن ہم  امن کے فروغ اور  پُرامن بقائے باہمی کی  اپنی پالیسی پر عمل پیرا رہنے کے عزم کا اعادہ کرتے ہیں۔ ہم اپنی قومی اور بین الاقوامی ذمہ داریوں سے آگاہ ہیں اور اقوام متحدہ کے پرچم  تلے دنیا میں قیامِ امن کے لیے اپنا  کردار ادا کرتے رہیں گے۔  ہمارا اپنا خطہ،جموں و  کشمیر کے دیرینہ تنازع کے حل کا منتظر ہے ۔خطے میں امن، سلامتی اور ترقی کیلئے اس تنازع کو  اقوام متحدہ کی سلامتی کونسل کی قراردادوں کے مطابق  حل کیا جانا چاہیے۔آج ہم کشمیری عوام، خواتین اور بچوں کی قربانیوں کو بھی یاد کرتے ہیں  جو انہوں نے اپنے حق خودارادیت کے لیے دہائیوں طویل جدوجہد کے دوران دی ہیں۔ پاکستان کشمیری عوام کے حقِ خودارادیت کی جائز جدوجہد کی اخلاقی اور سفارتی حمایت جاری رکھے گا۔

آج کا دن  ہم سے وطن کی خودمختاری ، سالمیت اور وقار کو ہرچیز سے مقدم رکھنے کا  بھی تقاضا کرتا ہے۔ پاکستان ہماری امیدوں کا مرکز ہے۔ آج یوم دفاع و شہداء کے موقع پر ہم ملک کے ان بہادربیٹوں اور بیٹیوں  کی عزت و تکریم کو سربلند رکھنے کا عزم کرتے ہیں جنہوں نے مادرِ وطن کے دفاع، ترقی اور خوشحالی کی خاطر اپنی جانیں قربان کرنے سے کبھی دریغ نہیں کیا۔
