Message on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, 3rd May 2025

On World Press Freedom Day, we reaffirm our commitment to upholding and promoting a free and responsible press in Pakistan. Today, we also honour the sacrifices made by those who have lost their lives in pursuit of truth, especially reporting in conflict zones like Gaza and Palestine. Their courage and dedication continue to inspire us.

Article 19 of the Constitution of Pakistan guarantees the right to freedom of speech and a free press, subject to certain restrictions. The media is indispensable for promoting dialogue, highlighting issues of social, economic and environmental significance, uncovering corruption and advocating for the marginalised. We have taken a number of steps for the protection and welfare of journalists, but more needs to be done by providing them a safe, secure, and enabling environment.

A culture where journalists feel secure to perform their duties without fear and harassment is the need of the time. I urge the media to uphold the highest standards of journalism, accuracy, and professionalism. The responsibility of the Media has become onerous in view of the environment of fake news, disinformation, and sensationalism undermining public trust.

Moreover, the media has a critical role in raising awareness of citizens’ rights and responsibilities, socio-economic issues, promoting civic education, and encouraging informed public participation in the democratic process. The press should serve as a bridge between the people and public institutions, and give voice to the voiceless.

On this day, let us renew our resolve to protect and promote press freedom as an essential element of our democracy. I hope the government would continue working to protect press freedoms and ensure journalists' safety, dignity, and independence. I am also hopeful that our media will continue to play its role in educating and informing our nation on issues of national and global significance.

آزادی ِصحافت کے عالمی دن پر ہم پاکستان میں ایک آزاد اور ذمہ دار پریس کے  فروغ کے عزم کا اعادہ کرتے ہیں۔ آج ہم  سچائی کی تلاش  ، خاص طور پر جنگ زدہ علاقوں جیسا کہ غزہ اور فلسطین، میں رپورٹنگ کے دوران اپنی جانیں گنوا دینے والے صحافیوں کو خراج ِتحسین پیش کرتے ہیں۔ ان کی جرات اور لگن ہمارے لیے مشعل راہ ہے۔

دستورِ پاکستان کا آرٹیکل 19 چند ضوابط کے تحت آزادی اظہار اور آزاد صحافت کی ضمانت دیتا ہے۔ مکالمے کے فروغ ، سماجی، اقتصادی اور ماحولیاتی اہمیت کے مسائل اجاگر کرنے، بدعنوانی بے نقاب کرنے اور پسماندہ طبقات کیلئے آواز بلند کرنے میں میڈیا کا کردار ناگزیر ہے۔ اگرچہ ہم نے صحافیوں کے تحفظ اور فلاح و بہبود کے لیے بہت سے اقدامات لیے ، مگر انھیں ایک محفوظ اور سازگار ماحول فراہم کرنے کے لیے ابھی مزید اقدامات کی ضرورت ہے۔

ایک ایسا کلچر جہاں صحافی خوف اور ہراس کے بغیر اپنے فرائض سرانجام دینے میں خود کو محفوظ محسوس کریں وقت کی ضرورت ہے۔ میں میڈیا پر زور دیتا ہوں کہ وہ اعلیٰ صحافتی معیار، خبروں میں درستگی اور پیشہ ورانہ مہارت کو برقرار رکھیں۔ عوام کے اعتماد کو مجروح کرنے والی جعلی خبروں، غلط معلومات اور سنسنی کے ماحول کے پیش ِنظر میڈیا کی ذمہ داری  اور بھی بڑھ گئی ہے۔

مزید برآں، شہریوں کے حقوق اور ذمہ داریوں  اور سماجی و اقتصادی مسائل بارے آگاہی ، شہری تعلیم کے فروغ ، اور جمہوری عمل میں عوام کی شرکت کی حوصلہ افزائی میں میڈیا کا ایک اہم کردار ہے۔ پریس کو عوام اور سرکاری اداروں کے درمیان پل کا کردار ادا کرنا چاہیے اور بے آواز لوگوں کی آواز بننا چاہیے۔

آج کے دن، آئیے ، ہم آزادی صحافت کے تحفظ اور فروغ کے عزم کی تجدید کریں جو کہ جمہوریت کا ایک لازمی عنصر ہے ۔ مجھے امید ہے کہ حکومت آزادی صحافت اور صحافیوں کے تحفظ، وقار اور آزادی کو یقینی بنانے کے لیے کام جاری رکھے گی۔ مجھے امید ہے کہ ہمارا میڈیا ہماری قوم کو قومی اور عالمی اہمیت کے مسائل پر تعلیم اور آگاہی فراہم کرنے میں اپنا کردار ادا کرتا رہے گا۔
