Message on the occasion of the Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign, 18th August 2025

The 18th of August marks the launch of a nationwide tree plantation drive at a time when Pakistan faces the harsh realities of climate change. The well-being and progress of any nation are grounded in the preservation of its forests and natural environment. Deforestation, rising temperatures, and frequent floods are challenges affecting millions of lives. With insufficient forest cover leaving our land vulnerable to disasters that endanger our economy, agriculture, and well-being, this campaign is not symbolic—it is an important step to safeguard Pakistan’s future.

Trees are the lifeline of our environment and one of the strongest defenses against climate change. They clean the air we breathe, enrich the soil that feeds us, regulate our climate, conserve our precious water resources, and provide shelter to countless species of life. Trees lower extreme temperatures, absorb rainwater, and reduce floods and landslides. Every tree planted is a shield against disaster and a source of life for generations.

This year, between August and October, over 41 million saplings will be planted across Pakistan. From cities to villages, and from schools to government institutions, this campaign will reshape our landscapes, strengthen resilience against climate disasters, and kindle hope for a greener tomorrow.

Its success depends on collective responsibility. Youth must lead as ambassadors of change, the media should inspire households, and farmers can protect both crops and the environment through tree plantation. Civil society, community leaders, and religious scholars must also motivate and encourage the people to plant trees as a national duty.

At this critical time, when climate change has already brought destruction to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of the country through floods and cloudbursts, we must act decisively to plant more and more trees. Our collective response must be to work for advancing the Green Pakistan Programme, a national initiative to expand forest cover, rehabilitate degraded lands, restore the balance of nature, and promote nature-based solutions. This is not simply about planting trees; it is about creating healthier communities, protecting livelihoods, and ensuring a climate-resilient future for generations to come.

In this plantation campaign, I urge all citizens to take part in this noble cause and plant saplings to build a greener, cleaner, and more prosperous Pakistan for generations to come.

ملک گیر شجر کاری مہم کا آغاز 18 اگست کو ایک ایسے وقت میں کیا جارہا ہے جب پاکستان کو موسمیاتی تبدیلی کے شدید خطرات کا سامنا ہے، کسی بھی قوم کی بھلائی اور ترقی اس کے جنگلات اور قدرتی ماحول کے تحفظ پر منحصر ہے۔ جنگلات کی کٹائی، بڑھتا ہوا درجہ حرارت اور مسلسل سیلاب جیسے چیلنجز لاکھوں زندگیوں کو متاثر کرتے ہیں۔ ناکافی جنگلات سے کرہ ارض ایسی آفات کا شکار ہوجاتی ہے جو ہماری معیشت، زراعت اور بہبود کو خطرے میں ڈالتی ہیں، شجر کاری مہم علامتی نہیں بلکہ یہ پاکستان کے مستقبل کے تحفظ کے لیے ایک اہم اقدام ہے۔

درخت ہمارے ماحول کی زندگی کی علامت اور موسمیاتی تبدیلی کے خلاف سب سے مضبوط دفاع ہیں۔ درخت ہوا کو صاف اور مٹی کو زرخیز بنانے میں معاون ہیں، یہ موسم کو متوازن رکھنے میں مددگار اور ہمارے قیمتی آبی وسائل کو محفوظ رکھنے کے ساتھ ساتھ زندگی کی بے شمار انواع کو پناہ فراہم کرتے ہیں۔ درخت انتہائی درجہ حرارت کو کم، بارش کا پانی جذب اور سیلاب اور لینڈ سلائیڈنگ کو کم کرتے ہیں۔ ہر لگایا گیا درخت آفات کے خلاف ڈھال اور نسلوں کے لیے زندگی کا ذریعہ ہے۔

اس سال اگست سے اکتوبر کے دوران پاکستان بھر میں 4 کروڑ 10 لاکھ سے زائد پودے لگائے جائیں گے۔ شہروں سے دیہات اور سکولوں سے لیکر سرکاری اداروں تک یہ مہم نہ صرف ہمارے مناظر کو نئی شکل دے گی بلکہ موسمیاتی آفات کے خلاف قوت مدافعت مضبوط کرے گی بلکہ ایک سرسبز مستقبل کی بنیاد رکھے گی۔

شجر کاری مہم کی کامیابی کا انحصار اجتماعی ذمہ داری پر ہے۔ نوجوانوں کو تبدیلی کے سفیر کے طور پر اس مہم کی قیادت کرنی چاہیے، ذرائع ابلاغ کو اس سلسلہ میں لوگوں کی حوصلہ افزائی کرنی چاہیے جبکہ کسان درخت لگاکر فصلوں اور ماحول کی حفاظت کرسکتے ہیں۔ سول سوسائٹی، کمیونٹی کے رہنماءاور مذہبی سکالر عوام کو اس اہم قومی فریضہ کی حمایت کے لئے متحرک کرسکتے ہیں۔ ہر شہری کو درخت لگانا قومی فریضہ سمجھنا چاہیے۔

ایک ایسے نازک وقت میں، جب موسمیاتی تبدیلی خیبرپختونخوا اور ملک کے دیگر حصوں میں سیلاب اور بادل پھٹنے کے ذریعے تباہی مچاچکی ہے، ہمیں زیادہ سے زیادہ درخت لگانے کے لیے فیصلہ کن طور پر کام کرنا چاہیے۔ ہمارا اجتماعی ردعمل ”گرین پاکستان پروگرام“ کو آگے بڑھانے کے لیے وقف ہونا چاہیے، جو جنگلات کے رقبے کو بڑھانے، انحتاط کا شکار زمینوں کی بحالی، فطرت کے توازن کی بحالی اور فطرت پر مبنی حل کو فروغ دینے کے لیے ایک قومی اقدام ہے۔ یہ صرف درخت لگانے کے بارے میں نہیں بلکہ صحت مند معاشرے کے قیام، معاش کی حفاظت اور مستقبل کی نسلوں کے لیے موسمیاتی قوت مدافعت بڑھانے کو یقینی بنانے کے بارے میں ہے۔

شجر کاری کی اس مہم میں، میں تمام اہل وطن سے اپیل کرتا ہوں کہ وہ اس نیک مقصد میں حصہ لیں اور آنے والی نسلوں کے لیے ایک سرسبز، صاف ستھرا اور زیادہ خوشحال پاکستان بنانے کے لیے پودے لگائیں۔
