Message on Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign, 18 August 2024

As we embark on the Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign 2024, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all Pakistanis for their unwavering dedication to preserving our environment. This campaign is not just a seasonal initiative; it is a crucial aspect of our national duty to protect and nurture the natural beauty and resources of our beloved country.

Trees are the foundation of life. They provide us with clean air, regulate our climate, and support diverse ecosystems. In the face of escalating environmental challenges, the significance of tree plantation cannot be overstated. Holy Prophet (PBUH) also encouraged planting trees and is reported to have said, “If the Hour (the day of Resurrection) is about to be established and one of you was holding a palm shoot, let him take advantage of even one second before the Hour is established to plant it”.

Currently, only about 5% of Pakistan's total land area is covered by forests, which are under severe pressure due to increasing demand for wood and other land uses. Through this Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign, we have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on our environment and secure a greener, healthier future for our younger generation.

I want to emphasize that forestry remains a top priority on Pakistan’s development agenda. The 'Upscaled Green Pakistan Programme' has achieved a massive planting target and is recognised internationally. Furthermore, under the Delta Blue Carbon initiative, Pakistan has undertaken successful mangrove restoration, increasing mangrove cover by 300% since 1990. Over 2 million mangroves have been planted in Sindh to mitigate the impacts of Climate Change, which also earned $27 million by trading carbon credits in the international market. Another restorative initiative is 'The Living Indus Program' which contains components aimed at halting deforestation and received the UN Decade of Restoration Flagship Award.

I would like to highlight that the Government alone cannot preserve and enhance our forest wealth without the cooperation and engagement of our communities. This requires the involvement of different strata of society and I hope they would lend their hand in this auspicious venture. It is essential that our younger generation understands the pivotal role forests play in addressing climate change. We are committed to building capacity, enhancing education, and promoting innovation to advance this important mission.

I urge all Pakistanis, particularly the youth, to actively participate in the Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign 2024 by planting as many trees as possible to support the national objective of increasing tree cover in the country. Let this campaign be a symbol of our commitment to sustainability and our love for the land that sustains us. Together, we can achieve our goal of a greener Pakistan.

کا مون سون شجرکاری مہم کیلئے پیغام،  18 اگست 2024ء

مون سون شجرکاری مہم 2024 ء کے آغاز پر  ماحولیاتی تحفظ کی جانب پاکستانیوں کی غیر متزلزل لگن پر تہہ ِدل سے ان کا شکریہ ادا کرتا ہوں۔ یہ مہم صرف ایک موسمی اقدام نہیں  بلکہ اپنے پیارے ملک کے قدرتی حسن اور وسائل کے تحفظ اور فروغ کے قومی فریضے کا ایک اہم پہلو ہے۔

درخت زندگی کی اساس ہیں؛ تازہ ہوا فراہم کرتے ہیں؛ آب و ہوا بہتر بناتے ہیں اور ایک متنوع ماحولیاتی نظام کے قیام میں مدد دیتے ہیں۔ بڑھتے ماحولیاتی مسائل کے پیش ِنظر، شجرکاری کی اہمیت  اور بھی بڑھ گئی ہے۔ رسول اللہ ﷺ نے بھی درخت لگانے کی ترغیب دی اور آپؐ کا فرمان ہے کہ  اگر قیامت قائم ہو جائے  اور تم میں سے كسی شخص كے ہاتھ میں کھجور کا پودا ہو  اور اسے قیامت قائم ہونے سے پہلے پودا گاڑنے كی مہلت مل جائے تو وہ اس پودے كو گاڑ دے۔

اس وقت، پاکستان کے کل رقبہ کا صرف 5% حصہ جنگلات سے ڈھکا ہے۔ لکڑی کی بڑھتی مانگ اور دیگر زمینی استعمالات کے باعث جنگلات پر شدید دباؤ ہے۔ مون سون شجرکاری مہم  ہمارے ماحول پر دیرپا  اثر ڈالنے اور نوجوان نسل کیلئے ایک سرسبزاور صحت مند مستقبل محفوظ بنانے کا موقع ہے۔

جنگلات کا فروغ پاکستان کے ترقیاتی ایجنڈے میں اولین ترجیح ہے۔ 'اپ اسکیلڈ گرین پاکستان پروگرام' کے تحت بڑے پیمانے پر پودے لگانے کا ہدف حاصل کیا گیا  ہے اور اسے بین الاقوامی سطح پر بھی تسلیم کیا گیا ۔ مزید برآں، ڈیلٹا بلیو کاربن اقدام کے تحت، پاکستان نے 1990 ءسے مینگرووز کے رقبے میں 300 فیصد اضافہ کرکے مینگرووز بحالی  میں کامیابی حاصل کی ۔ موسمیاتی تبدیلی کے اثرات کم کرنے کے لیے سندھ میں 20 لاکھ سے زائد مینگرووز لگائے گئے ، جس سے عالمی مارکیٹ میں کاربن کریڈٹس کی تجارت سے 27 ملین ڈالر بھی کمائے گئے ۔ 'دی لیونگ انڈس پروگرام' کا مقصد جنگلات کی کٹائی روکنا ہے اور اسے اقوام ِمتحدہ دہائی کی بحالی کا فلیگ شپ ایوارڈ ملا ہے۔

میں یہ واضح کرنا چاہوں گا کہ حکومت کمیونٹی کے تعاون کے بغیر جنگلی وسائل کا فروغ اور تحفظ نہیں  کر سکتی۔ اس کیلئے معاشرے کے مختلف طبقات کی شمولیت ناگزیر ہے اور مجھے امید ہے کہ وہ اس نیک کام میں اپنا حصہ ضرور ڈالیں گے۔ یہ امر بھی ضروری ہے کہ ہماری نوجوان نسل موسمیاتی تبدیلیوں سے نمٹنے میں جنگلات کے کردار کی اہمیت سے آگاہ ہو۔ ہم اس اہم مشن کو آگے بڑھانے کے لیے استعداد ِ کار بڑھانے، تعلیم  اور جدت کے فروغ کیلئے پرعزم ہیں۔

میں تمام پاکستانیوں بالخصوص نوجوانوں سے گزارش کرتا ہوں کہ وہ مون سون شجرکاری مہم 2024ء میں بڑھ چڑھ کر حصہ لیں تاکہ زیادہ سے زیادہ درخت لگا کر ملک میں جنگلات کے فروغ کا قومی مقصد حاصل کیا جا سکے۔ آئیے ، ہم اس مہم کو پائیداری کیلئے ہمارے عزم اور اس سر زمین کیلئے ہماری محبت کی علامت بنائیں۔ مجھے یقین ہے کہ ہم سب مل کر ایک سرسبز و شاداب پاکستان کا مقصد حاصل کر سکتے  ہیں۔
