(Message on the occasion of World Hepatitis Day on 28 July 2023)

Today, we commemorate World Hepatitis Day to raise awareness about the critical issue of hepatitis and related diseases in Pakistan. Hepatitis B and C viruses pose significant public health threats, causing immense morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the Eastern Mediterranean Region, a staggering 80% of the hepatitis C disease burden lies in Egypt and Pakistan. While Egypt has made commendable progress in combating hepatitis C, regrettably, our country remains a major contributor to this burden in our region.

Hepatitis C is a dangerous, silent disease, often carrying no signs or symptoms until it has done significant damage to the liver. We must realize that individuals infected with this virus continue to carry it for years, putting them at high risk of advanced-stage liver disease and cancer. To ensure the well-being of our nation, we need to prioritize the screening and early diagnosis of hepatitis C cases. Presently, Pakistan has the world's largest population of patients living with Hepatitis C, a staggering 10 million cases. It is our duty to actively screen our entire population and promptly treat those found positive.

Without timely action, the number of HCV-infected cases in Pakistan may rise exponentially, leading to a devastating liver cancer epidemic. The consequences are alarming: numerous deaths, liver cirrhosis cases, and a significant burden on our economy. We cannot let this happen; we must take action today to secure a healthier and prosperous future for our nation.

On World Hepatitis Day, we reaffirm our commitment to making hepatitis prevention, control, and elimination a national priority. We are scaling up screening, testing, and treatment efforts while emphasizing preventive interventions nationwide. We must address the risk factors of the disease urgently, such as ensuring safe blood transfusions, using auto-disable syringes, strict infection control practices in healthcare settings, and implementing hepatitis B birth dose and adult vaccination.

I call upon all healthcare workers, stakeholders, and citizens to join hands in this crucial endeavour. Let us spread awareness about hepatitis prevention, screening, and treatment throughout our communities. Together, we can create a healthier and brighter future for Pakistan, free from the burden of hepatitis and its related diseases by protecting the health of our people.

کا ہیپاٹائٹس کے عالمی دن ، 28 جولائی 2023 ء ، کے موقع پر پیغام

آج ہم پاکستان میں ہیپاٹائٹس اورمتعلقہ بیماریوں کے بارے میں آگاہی پیدا کرنے کیلئے ہیپاٹائٹس کا عالمی دن منا رہے ہیں۔ ہیپاٹائٹس بی اور سی وائرس  سے صحت عامہ کو بڑے خطرات لاحق ہیں اور اس سے دنیا بھر میں بے پناہ بیماریاں  اور اموات واقع ہوتی ہیں۔ مشرقی بحیرہ روم کے علاقے میں،  ہیپاٹائٹس سی کی بیماری کا 80 فیصد بوجھ مصر اور پاکستان پرہے۔ مصر نے ہیپاٹائٹس سی کے خلاف جنگ میں قابل تعریف کامیابی حاصل کی ہے تاہم، یہ ایک افسوسناک امر ہے کہ ابھی بھی  ہمارا ملک اپنے خطے میں اس بوجھ کا ایک بڑا حصہ دار ہے۔

ہیپاٹائٹس سی ایک خطرناک اور خاموش بیماری ہے۔ اکثر اس بیماری کی علامات اس وقت تک ظاہر نہیں ہوتی جب تک کہ اس سے جگر کو شدید نقصان نہ پہنچ چکا ہو۔ ہمیں یہ سمجھنا ہوگا کہ اس وائرس سے متاثرہ افراد برسوں تک اس کو ساتھ لے کر چلتے ہیں جس کے نتیجے میں انہیں جگر کی بیماری اور اگلی اسٹیج کے کینسر کا خطرہ لاحق ہوجاتا ہے ۔ ہمیں اپنی قوم کی فلاح و بہبود یقینی بنانے کیلئے ہیپاٹائٹس سی کی اسکریننگ اور جلد تشخیص کو ترجیح دینے کی ضرورت ہے۔ اس وقت، پاکستان میں تقریباً ایک کروڑ  ہیپاٹائٹس سی کے مریضوں کی سب سے بڑی آبادی ہے۔ یہ ہمارا فرض ہے کہ ہم اپنی پوری آبادی کی فعال طور پر اسکریننگ کریں اور ہیپاٹائٹس مثبت افراد کا فوری علاج کریں۔

بروقت کارروائی نہ کرنے کی صورت میں پاکستان میں ہیپاٹائٹس سے متاثرہ افراد کی تعداد میں تیزی سے اضافہ ہوسکتا ہےجس سے جگر کے کینسر کی تباہ کن وبا پھیلنے کا خطرہ ہوسکتاہے۔ انگنت اموات، جگر کی بیماری، اور معیشت پر بڑے بوجھ کی صورت میں اس کے خطرناک نتائج ہو سکتے ہیں۔ ہم ایسا نہیں ہونے دے سکتے۔ ہمیں اپنی قوم کے صحت مند اور خوشحال مستقبل کیلئے آج ہی اقدامات لینا ہوں گے۔

ہیپاٹائٹس کے عالمی دن پرہم ہیپاٹائٹس کی روک تھام، کنٹرول اور خاتمے کو قومی ترجیح بنانے کے عزم کا اعادہ کرتے ہیں۔ ہم ملک بھر میں احتیاطی تدابیر پر توجہ دیتے ہوئے اسکریننگ، ٹیسٹنگ اور علاج کی سہولیات کو بڑھا رہے ہیں۔ ہمیں بیماری کا خطرہ بڑھانے والےعوامل کو فوری طور پر کم کرنا  ہوگا۔ اس کیلئے ہمیں خون کی محفوظ منتقلی ، خودکار طور پر غیر فعال ہونے والی سرنجوں کےاستعمال اور انفیکشن کنٹرول   کو یقینی بنانا ہوگا۔ مزید برآں، پیدائش کے وقت ہیپاٹائٹس کے خلاف خوراک اور بالغوں  کو حفاظتی ٹیکے بھی لگانا ہوں گے۔

میں تمام ہیلتھ کیئر ورکرز،  متعلقہ اسٹیک ہولڈرز اور شہریوں سے اس اہم مقصد میں ہمارا ساتھ دینے کی اپیل کرتا ہوں۔ آئیں،  ہم اپنے لوگوں میں ہیپاٹائٹس سے بچاؤ، اسکریننگ اور علاج کے بارے میں آگاہی پیدا کریں۔ اگر ہم سب مل کر اپنے لوگوں کی صحت  کو یقینی بنائیں تو ہم مستقبل میں ہیپاٹائٹس سے پاک  ایک صحت مند اور روشن پاکستان  کا قیام عمل میں لا سکتے ہیں۔
