Message on World Environment Day  - 5th June 2026

On World Environment Day, I call upon our citizens and the international community to recognise the urgency of protecting our environment and addressing the growing threat of climate change. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, glacier melt, water stress, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation are no longer distant concerns. They are affecting lives and economies across the world today.

This year’s World Environment Day focuses on climate action. It is a reminder that the decisions we make now will shape the quality of life of future generations. Climate change is not only an environmental challenge. It is also a challenge for public health, food security, economic growth and sustainable development.

Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, despite contributing less than one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Our farmers face changing weather patterns, our communities are increasingly exposed to floods and heatwaves and our natural resources are under growing pressure. The combination of global warming with climate phenomena such as El Niño is likely to further increase climate-related risks and place additional pressure on vulnerable communities and key sectors of the economy. Women, children and other vulnerable groups often bear the heaviest burden of these challenges.

For ordinary citizens, environmental degradation has practical consequences. It can affect access to clean water, reduce agricultural productivity, disrupt livelihoods and place additional strain on public services. Extreme weather can damage homes, schools, roads and health facilities, making daily life more difficult for families and communities across the country.

Addressing these challenges requires action at every level. We must use water responsibly, reduce waste, protect forests, preserve biodiversity and promote cleaner sources of energy. Environmental responsibility should be reflected in our homes, schools, businesses and public institutions.

I encourage our youth, civil society, academia, religious leaders, media and the private sector to play an active role in raising awareness and advancing practical solutions. The energy, innovation and commitment of our young people can make a significant contribution to building a more environmentally responsible future.

Pakistan remains committed to international cooperation on climate and environmental issues. We will continue to support efforts aimed at ecosystem restoration, renewable energy, disaster preparedness and climate-resilient development.

On this World Environment Day, let us strengthen our resolve to protect the environment, use our natural resources responsibly and leave a safer and more resilient Pakistan for future generations.

 عالمی یومِ ماحولیات کے موقع پر، میں اپنے شہریوں اور عالمی برادری سے اپیل کرتا ہوں کہ وہ ماحول کے تحفظ اور موسمیاتی تبدیلی کے بڑھتے ہوئے خطرے کی سنگینی کو سمجھیں۔ بڑھتا درجۂ حرارت، شدید موسمی واقعات، پگھلتے گلیشیئرز ، پانی کی قلت، حیاتیاتی تنوع کا نقصان اور ماحولیاتی انحطاط اب مستقبل کے نہیں بلکہ موجودہ وقت میں ہی دنیا بھر میں انسانی زندگیوں اور معیشتوں کو متاثر کر رہے ہیں۔

اس سال عالمی یومِ ماحولیات کا مرکزی موضوع 'موسمیاتی اقدام' ہے۔ یہ اس بات کی یاد دہانی ہے کہ آج کیے گئے فیصلے آنے والی نسلوں کے معیارِ زندگی کا تعین کریں گے۔ موسمیاتی تبدیلی صرف ایک ماحولیاتی مسئلہ نہیں بلکہ یہ صحتِ عامہ، غذائی تحفظ اور معاشی ترقی کے لیے بھی ایک بڑا چیلنج ہے۔

پاکستان موسمیاتی تغیر کے اثرات سے سب سے زیادہ متاثرہ ممالک میں شامل ہے، حالانکہ گرین ہاؤس گیسوں کے اخراج میں اس کا حصہ ایک فیصد سے بھی کم ہے۔ ہمارے کسان بدلتے ہوئے موسموں کا سامنا کر رہے ہیں، ہماری بستیاں سیلابوں اور شدید گرمی کی زد میں آ رہی ہیں اور ہمارے قدرتی وسائل پر دباؤ بڑھ رہا ہے۔ گلوبل وارمنگ کے ساتھ ساتھ ایل نینو جیسے موسمی مظاہر ان خطرات کو مزید بڑھا سکتے ہیں اور کمزور طبقات اور معیشت پر اضافی دباؤ ڈال سکتے ہیں۔ خواتین، بچے اور دیگر کمزور طبقات ان چیلنجز کا سب سے زیادہ بوجھ اٹھاتے ہیں۔

عام شہریوں پر ماحولیاتی انحطاط کے براہ راست اثرات  ہوتے ہیں۔ اس سے صاف پانی کی دستیابی متاثر ہو سکتی ہے، زرعی پیداوار کم ہو سکتی ہے، روزگار کے ذرائع متاثر ہو سکتے ہیں اور عوامی خدمات کے اداروں پر مزید دباؤ پڑ سکتا ہے۔ شدید موسمی حالات گھروں، اسکولوں، سڑکوں اور صحت کے مراکز کو نقصان پہنچا سکتے ہیں، جس سے عوام کی روزمرہ زندگی مشکل ہو جاتی ہے۔

ان چیلنجز سے نمٹنے کے لیے ہر سطح پر عملی اقدامات ضروری ہیں جن میں پانی کا دانشمندانہ استعمال، فضلہ کم کرنا، جنگلات کا تحفظ، حیاتیاتی تنوع کی حفاظت اور صاف توانائی کے ذرائع کو فروغ دینا شامل ہیں۔ ماحولیاتی ذمہ داری کے اقدامات کو ہمارے گھروں، اسکولوں، کاروباری اداروں اور سرکاری اداروں میں عملی طور پر اپنانا ہوگا۔

میں نوجوانوں، سول سوسائٹی، تعلیمی اداروں، مذہبی رہنماؤں، میڈیا اور نجی شعبے کی حوصلہ افزائی کرتا ہوں کہ وہ آگاہی پھیلانے اور عملی حل تلاش کرنے میں فعال کردار ادا کریں۔ ہمارے نوجوانوں کی توانائی، جدت اور عزم ایک ماحولیاتی طور پر ذمہ دار مستقبل کی تعمیر میں اہم کردار ادا کر سکتے ہیں۔

پاکستان ماحولیاتی اور موسمیاتی امور پر بین الاقوامی تعاون کے لیے پرعزم ہے۔ ہم ماحولیاتی نظام کی بحالی، قابلِ تجدید توانائی، آفات سے نمٹنے کی تیاری اور موسمیاتی لحاظ سے مضبوط ترقی کے لیے کوششوں کی حمایت جاری رکھیں گے۔

 آئیے، ہم ماحول کا تحفظ کرنے، قدرتی وسائل کا ذمہ دارانہ استعمال کرنے اور آنے والی نسلوں کے لیے ایک محفوظ پاکستان بنانے کے عزم کا اعادہ کریں۔
