President Mamnoon Hussain and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have expressed concern at the situation in Yemen and emphasized upon early resolution of the crisis.
The two dignitaries met here in Istanbul, Turkey on Saturday.
President Mamnoon Hussain said that Pakistan was making all possible efforts for an early and peaceful resolution of the crisis. The President stated that Pakistan’s commitment to Saudi Arabia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity has been an important pillar of its foreign policy. The two Presidents condemned the overthrow of legitimate government of President Mansur Hadi in Yemen by the Houthi rebels.
President Mamnoon Hussain stated that economic ties between Pakistan and Turkey were not commensurate with the excellent bilateral political relations adding there is a need to find mutual ways to expand economic partnership. The President said that Pakistan had not been included in Turkey’s list of countries accorded GSP plus and expressed hope that the latter would review its position and agree to extend GSP plus to Pakistan. The President stated that a number of Turkish companies had expressed interest in Dasu Dam Project which is nearing pre-qualification stage.
Speaking on the occasion, Turkish President said that he has encouraged Turkish companies to invest in infrastructure and construction sectors and the building of dams in Pakistan. He also stressed on enhancing bilateral collaboration in the field of technology. President Mamnoon Hussain expressed appreciation for the Turkish President’s efforts at encouraging Turkish companies to invest in Pakistan’s energy sector particularly in hydro power projects. The President expressed hope that bilateral cooperation in the areas of defence, security and counter terrorism would continue between the two friendly countries.
The President said that Pakistan and Turkey as friends and brothers have always stood shoulder to shoulder and shared each other’s joys and sorrows together. The President stated that mutual understanding and convergence of views between the two nations continue to increase with each bilateral visit.
The President said that it was an honour to join the Turkish people on the historic occasion of the centenary commemoration of the Canakkale battles. The President stated that Pakistan also pays homage to the brave Turkish soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice thereby paving the way for the eventual establishment of an independent Turkish Republic. On the occasion, Turkish President thanked President Mamnoon Hussain on attending centenary celebrations of the Canakkale battles.
President Mamnoon Hussain praised the progress and development of Turkish nation under the dynamic leadership of Turkey. The President stated that the 4th meeting of the High Level Strategic Cooperation Council (HLSCC) in Islamabad in February 2015 was a good opportunity to review bilateral relations across all fields.
The President emphasized the importance of reinforcing bilateral cooperation through frequent exchanges in the parliamentary, cultural, media and people to people domains. The President also extended an invitation to his Turkish counterpart to visit Pakistan at the earliest convenience.
