President Mamnoon Hussain has said that healthy minds and bodies contribute a great deal in the overall development and progress of a nation and called for promoting and expanding sports activities across the country.
The President was addressing the awards distribution ceremony of Pakistan Day Polo Cup at Islamabad Club on Tuesday.
The President said that the government is taking measures to enhance the provision of sports facilities across the country adding that sports activities not only make a society physically fit but also keep it mentally and psychologically healthy.
The President called for promoting and involving the youth of the country in healthy and constructive activities to keep them away from despondency, hopelessness and negative tendencies.
Appreciating Islamabad Club on organizing Pakistan Day Polo Cup Tournament, the President called upon the Club to patronize other sports events as well adding that it would further promote sports activities.
The President said that sports develop social discipline which in turn creates balance in the society. The President noted that lack of discipline in the society has generated many of the problems that we are facing today including the curse of corruption.
The President recalled that last year while inaugurating the Polo Ground at Islamabad Club he had suggested to hold Polo Cup event every year to commemorate Pakistan Day as it would enhance the importance of this sport.
The President also called upon the Club and related departments to regularly organize tournaments of other sports on national days to expand the scope of healthy activities in the country.
Addressing the diplomatic community present on the occasion, the President asked them for more frequent utilization of sports and recreational facilities offered by the Club. They should also communicate their feed back to the Club administration, which in view of their multi-cultural experience will help the Club to further improve its standards, added the President.
The President also felicitated the winning team and distributed prizes.
President Mamnoon Hussain called upon Ulemas and religious scholars to play proactive role in promoting ethical values, tolerance, brotherhood and religious co-existence in the society. The President emphasized that Ulemas and religious scholars should preach against the curses of corruption and bribery in their sermons and speeches in the light of noble teachings of Islam.
The President said this while in a sitting with Ulemas and religious scholars on a topic “Lack of Ethical values and Corruption” at Aiwan-e-Sadr, Islamabad.
The President stated, in view of current scenario, it is the national responsibility of religious scholars and Mashaikhs to press the importance of unity, forbearance and religious harmony in the country. The President said that dark forces are bent upon denting the unity and fabric of society through their hideous designs and underscored the urgency to collectively defeat the negative mindset adding that religious scholars could play an important role in this regard. The President stressed that it is the duty of Ulemas to propagate inter-faith harmony in the country.
The President observed that moral values have weakened over the years and social evils like greed, bribery and corruption gained grounds and called upon the religious clerics to reverse the tide in the light of Islamic guidelines.
The President also said that the government is committed to weed out the disease of corruption from the country.
